Allseating | 2009

Ray™ is a conference and executive chair based on a integrated, body balanced mechanism.  

The intent was to create a counterpoint to the typical high functionality of exoskeleton chairs of the time. We wanted something ‘quieter’, something that may not date so quickly, and thereby last longer – both functionally and visually.   

The mechanism required a number of mechanical elements in the chair to enable it’s function.  Among them a structural and pivoting link between the seat and the back.  This was combined with the arm, furthering the visual simplicity of the chair.  A sliding link to the back was achieved through a sculptural cast ‘j-bar’ acknowledging the most commonly seen portion of a chair is it’s back.

The chair was developed in collaboration with Cooler Solutions Inc. and a midback and highback version of the chair are available.

Ray was awarded a Silver at NeoCon 2009 (the first Neocon award in Allseating’s history), and a GOOD DESIGN award (2009).
