B-Sides 2020
The ‘Fig40 B-sides’ are a collection of furniture experiments and ideas that have evolved in our studio over the past few years. Our work always involves a significant amount of experimenting and prototyping, mostly in service to projects directly for commercial clients. In between projects, other ideas emerge that warrant further exploration with an uncertain outcome. This exhibition is a selection of those experiments, in a similar way to a band releasing an album of B-sides and rarities.
Although individual pieces the thread that links them together is an exploration of materials, compositions and function to create products that are approachable, neighbourly and elemental.

Bench 78: An exploration of lighter forms and tensile structures. Thin hardwood with wire legs, kept rigid with a tension cable.
Stool 14 : Material choices create a multi environment stool. High performance concrete and powder coated steel compose an elemental stool for outdoor or indoor use.
Stitched Stool: Using tension and forces to create a simple elegant seat. Leather stitched to the steel frame eliminates the need for fasteners and creates a lightweight, compliant stool.
Thread Table: Using the properties of material to enable function. Light in form yet stable pull up table leverages the weighted concrete in the base, steel stiffness in the frame, warm wood on the surface.
